In accordance with the provisions of regulation (EU) 2015/2283 only novel foods authorised and included in the Union list they may be placed on the Union market as such or used in and on food, in accordance with specifications, the conditions of use and the additional labelling requirements specified in that list.

The initial establishment of the Union list  (implementing regulation (EU) 2017/2470) novel foods authorised or notified in accordance with Regulation (EC) no 258/97 were registered.

The Union List shall be updated by the Commission on each addition or deletion of a novel food or on addition, deletion or amendment of the specification, conditions of use, specific labelling requirements or post-market monitoring requirements of a novel food ((List of implementing regulations updating the Union list).).

Under the provisions of regulation (EU) 2015/2283, authorisations for novel foods are of general application [they are not addressed only to the applicant as provided for in Reg. (EC) 258/97], unless they relate to an authorisation of a novel food covered by data protection.
