Authorisation procedures for novel foods

The procedure for authorising the placing on the market within the Union of a novel food shall start either on the initiative of the Commission or following an application to the Commission in accordance with Article 10 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.The administrative and scientific requirements for that application are laid down in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2469, and guidance is given in the opinion of the European Food Safety Authority “Administrative guidance on the submission of applications for authorization of a novel food pursuant to Article 10 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283”.

 

The authorisation to place on the market traditional food from third countries shall be subject to a notification procedure to the Commission in accordance with Article 14 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The administrative and scientific requirements for such notification are laid down in Commission  Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2468 and guidance is given in the opinion of the European Food Safety Authority “Guidance on the preparation and presentation of the notification and application for authorization of traditional foods from third countries in the context of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283”.

 

The abovementioned applications for authorisation of a novel food or notification of a traditional food from a third country shall be submitted online through  [e-submission system for NovelFoods], following the relevant Commission guidance [e-submissionsystemforNovelFoods - User Guide].
