Consultation procedure for the establishment of the novel food status

In accordance with the provisions of  Article 4 of Regulation (ΕU) 2015/2283, food business operators shall verify whether the food they intend to place on the Union market falls within the scope of that Regulation.

If food business operators, having regard to all available information, are not sure whether the food they intend to place on the Union market falls within the scope of the Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, they shall consult the  competent authority of the Member State in which they intend to place the food in question on the market for the first time.

The consultation procedure to be followed for the determination of the novel food status is described in Commission  Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/456. 

The competent national authority for the purposes of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/456 is the Alcohol and Food Directorate of the GCSL in order to examine whether a food falls under the novel food status, an accompanying letter and technical documentation, as provided for in Annexes I and II to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, should be submitted to  novelfood-gr@gcsl.gr .
